Rockabilly In : JAPAN

As we often get messages asking about Vintage or Rockabilly music scenes in different countries, this week we decided to take a look into the excellent Rockabilly coming out of Japan. It seems that it would be an understatement to say that there is a growing scene over in Japan at the moment. Even Rhythm Bomb Records have signed a Japanese band (The Pringles).

The Japanese Rockabillies have become famous for dancing in Yoyogi Park in Tokyo !:

They also have some great bands and original music. Here are some of our favourite Japanese Rockabilly videos:

Rob Ryan Roadshow – Live In The Park, Montreux Jazz Festival – Rhythm Bomb Records

robryanroadshow_cover.jpg

The first ever review of a (eighteen track ) live album is this offering by The Rob Ryan Roadshow. A great Country/Rockabilly/Roots band from Germany, Italy and of course the US ( Rob Ryan himself). The band have seen a lot of success opening for acts such as Imelda May and The Boss Hoss and being signed to the famous Rhythm Bomb Records.

Being a live album there are some differences to what you might usually find on an album. Firstly the recording quality isn’t up to the standard of  the best studio releases, however Alex Ott has done a great job and has kept the feel of a live gig in the album. Secondly there are occasional mistakes in the playing but these are easily forgiven, just part of a live gig.

The music itself is a real mix. Take a large bit of Country, a good dash of Rockabilly, add some roots Rock and a hint of Bluegrass and you might have an idea of how they sound.

A quick Roadshow Rundown:

Track one is called “Not Good Enought” a real rockin’ song with hints of Dwight Yoakam. A real driving song packed full of energy and growly guitar work. Sadly it can be hard to hear the lyrics at times.Track two is “Highway Man” a pretty good song. I’d say it has a George Strait feel with the laid backness of a classic rockabilly tune.

Track three is called “Truck Drivin’ Man” which sounds sort of similar to Honky Tonk Woman by the Rolling Stones mixed with some crazy Setzeresc Rockabilly guitar.Again in places it can be hard to hear the lyrics. The fourth track “Mind Your Own Business” is like a classic Hank Williams “Move It On Over” sort of tune dirtied up and a little bluesy.

“Rollin With Jesus” is where the bluegrass influence comes in but its well and truly electrified and thought a religious title may put some people off its definitely not one to miss and even includes a little yodel !! “Call Me Shorty” is a bit of a classic tune, you know lyrics about Cadillacs and that !

Track seven “Pick Me Up”is where the band starts to mellow to give Mr Ryan’s voice a bit of time to relax. It’s a nice tune with some lovely guitar work.”Goin Out Drinkin” is a fast Rockabilly/Western Swing number with some Cliff Gallup inspired soloing.

The song “Good Rockin” contains some unnecessary swearing. They seem to be trying to crowbar “motherf*cking” into the lyric, it doesn’t really work. However it is still a very Country kick ass song.”Plain Jane” is a stripped back number which suits the title.”Stay In Bed” features a good chord sequence and some tasty instrumental work.

“Not Anymore” is a real highlight of the album the energy is back !! “Cold Hard Truth” is a really cool song as well a definite favourite. “Heaven Yes” however isn’t quite up to the same standard and a little too repetitive (but then maybe “Cold Hard Truth” was a hard act to follow !).Track 15 has them back to the electrified bluegrass sound with the appropriately named “Bluegrass Song” !

“Full Time Lovin’ Man” is a fast paced sexual song like a countryfied dirty Jerry Lee tune with some nice little whoops here and there ! “Good Hearted Woman” is a more chilled out song nice clear acoustic guitar and sounds really traditional. And finally “Monkey Beat Heaven” roughs things back up again for the grand finale !

The Best Of : Bopflix

Well as Bopflix has been around longer than us, we thought we’d share what we think are the best Bopflix videos that you might of missed.

Australian rocker Pat Capocci’s “Slave For The Beat”(Press-Tone/Wild) happens to be our favorite song on Bopflix and has a simple yet effective video. He’s also coming over to the UK this year to headline the Rockabilly Rave so well worth checking out.

One of Rhythm Bomb’s ( and now Ruby Records’s) best acts, the uber talented Ruby Ann is the artist featured in this next video. A great little number accompanied by a slick video which truly shows off Chris Magee’s filming and editing skills.

Dynamic duo, the Bonneville Barons take the third spot. They sure kick out a lot of sound for just two members !

Bopflix must be pretty proud of the punchy green screen video. Super classy !!

Maryann And The Tri-tones – Kitten Walk – Rhythm Bomb Records

maryann_kitten_small.jpg

The Estonian rockabilly band have done it again, releasing a second Album now on Rhythm Bomb Records. Maryann Lants and her band have released a really authentic sounding top notch late 50’s RCAish style album.

They have done particularly well at writing lyrics in english and overall have come up with some pretty damn good original songs ! Its really easy to listen to and is a perfect album to listen to in your car (well anywhere really !! ).

Our favourite track is one called”Love Me Tonight”a  nicely paced song and really shows the style of the band off. “Hold Me Tight”, the first track on the album, comes a close second (Its a great upbeat number).

Our new favourite band !!

Sharna-Mae And The Mayhems – Love Drunk – Western Star

Yet another great young rockabilly band, Sharna-Mae and The Mayhems burst onto the rockabilly scene, releasing there debut album “Love Drunk” on the top record label, Western Star, to much praise (including famous radio presenter Bob Harris).

Twelve tracks of pure vintage styled music. If you like twangy guitars, powerful vocals, thumping bass and driving drums its well worth a listen. They may be young but they are certainly up to the standard and easily better than many older bands.

The name would suggest they are heavily inspired by Imelda May however from listening there is plenty more different influences in there. A powerful Rockabilly voice with a dash of classic Country.

Pretty cool video too if I do say so !! We also look forward watching them develop into the premier band on the scene !!

Don’t hesitate just buy the album !!!!

The Palomars – Out Of The Past – Catty Town Records

unnamed.jpg

Our first review is of a fantastic album released by The Palomars on the newly formed Catty Town Records.

The Canadian band from Vancouver have created a masterpiece. Its one of the best records we have heard in a while.A mix of original compositions with some well covered classics thrown in for good measure. Our favourite is the title track “Out Of The Past” with “My Gal Pal” a close second.

The magnificent blend of Western Swing, Rockabilly and Jazz is brought to life by Tom Hammel’s outstanding steel guitar playing.

The recording itself is crystal clear and the production is somewhat reminiscent of a Jive Aces album. The Lyrics are easy to hear and the band is well mixed and a pleasure to listen too.

We look forward to the next release !!! Catty Town and The Palomars have a bright future ahead.
